New Publication: Silently ageing, quietly shrinking

Dr. Anton Paumelle, Pop Place member Rachel Barber, affiliated researcher Beatriz Fernandez, and Pop Place Director Maxwell Hartt researcher recently published an article in the journal Cities. The article, entitled “Silently ageing, quietly shrinking: Examining age-friendly policy in French and Canadian shrinking cities”, demonstrates the geographies of and relationships between population decline and demographic aging in both countries. Despite the strong relationship between these two phenomena, the study found that shrinking, ageing cities were rarely members of the World Health Organization’s Age-friendly Cities network. Of the few cities that were members of the network and had developed age-friendly policy documents, none had policies referring to population shrinkage.
